Typical % uplifts: the starting assumptions used here

These are the percentages the calculator starts with. They are illustrative starting assumptions, not surveyed market rates. We have not measured what creators charge, and published figures vary widely by niche, platform and negotiating position. Treat the table as a template for a conversation. If you edit a percentage in the calculator, this table updates to match.

Uplift as a % of the creator's base fee. Editable assumptions.

Usage rights on gifted content

A creator who posts about a free product owns that post. Receiving the product does not give you the right to boost it, repost it on your site or put it in an ad. If you want any of that, agree it before you ship.

  • Ask in writing, up front. Put the channels and the time window in the gifting agreement, not in a DM after the post is live.
  • No base fee? Use the content's value. Enter what you would pay a creator for the same post as the base fee above. That gives you a number to offer, or a number to decide a product swap is fair.
  • Separate organic reposting from ads. Many creators are happy to be reshared with credit. Paid use and whitelisting are a bigger ask and are usually priced separately.
  • Keep disclosures on. Ads built from creator content still need the creator relationship disclosed. See the FTC's Disclosures 101 for social media influencers.

The free influencer contract generator includes a usage-rights clause you can adapt, and the gifting vs paid ads tool shows how licensed content compares with other ways to get creative.

Frequently asked questions

How much should I pay for influencer usage rights?

There is no standard rate. Usage fees are negotiated, usually as a percentage on top of the creator's base fee, and they rise with the length of the licence, the number of channels, and any exclusivity. Use this calculator to get a starting figure, then replace its percentages with whatever you and the creator agree.

What is the difference between usage rights and whitelisting?

Usage rights are the licence to reuse the creator's content: where, for how long, and in what format. Whitelisting (Spark Ads, partnership ads) is a specific kind of usage where the ad runs from the creator's handle. It needs the creator's platform authorization on top of the licence.

Does gifted content include usage rights?

Not automatically. A free product does not by itself give you the right to run the creator's post as an ad. If you want ad usage, ask for it in writing before you ship, and expect to pay for it or offer something of value. Our free contract generator has a usage-rights clause.

Is perpetual usage a good idea?

Rarely, for the creator. A licence with no end date gives them nothing more to negotiate, so it is normally priced well above a fixed term. Most brands run ads for weeks or months, so a 90-day or 12-month licence you can renew is usually the cheaper and cleaner choice.

Do I still need an FTC disclosure when I run the content as an ad?

Yes. The FTC's guidance for endorsers says paid or free-product relationships should be clearly disclosed, and that applies when a brand amplifies the post as an ad. Check the FTC's Disclosures 101 guide, and ask your lawyer about your specific case. This page is not legal advice.

Methodology and sources

Last updated: October 29, 2026. The formula is usage fee = base fee x (duration % + sum of channel % + exclusivity %) / 100. It is a negotiating framework, not a market survey. Every percentage is an editable assumption that we chose as a starting point. We did not measure what creators charge, and we do not claim these numbers are typical.
