Gifting vs Paid Ads Calculator

Gifting is cheaper than ads only when enough creators post and the posts get enough views. Enter your own post rate, views per post and ad CPM to compare cost per 1,000 views side by side. The starting assumptions below put gifting at $15.00 and ads at $15.60 per 1,000, but those inputs are placeholders.

Calculator

Gifting inputs come first, ad inputs below them. The currency button only changes the symbol. The address updates as you type so you can share the comparison.

Your inputs

Every value starts as an editable assumption. Views per post, post rate, CPM and CPA are the ones to replace first with numbers from your own accounts.

Gifting

Product, packaging, shipping.

Optional. Leave at 0 if you have not tracked any; cost per order then shows a dash.

Paid ads

Cost per 1,000 impressions, from your ad account.

Optional, for the cost-per-order row.

Used for the third column only.

Impressions and views are not the same thing, so read the 1,000-view row as a rough yardstick. Cost per order for gifting needs your own tracked orders; our promo code attribution page covers how to track them.

When gifting wins

  • Your cost per package is low relative to what a creator would charge, and a good share of creators post. Test this with the how many to gift calculator.
  • You want varied, authentic-looking content to learn which angles work, not a guaranteed delivery date.
  • Your product is easy to ship and easy to show on camera, so the post is the product doing the talking.
  • You can wait. Gifting takes weeks from outreach to posts, while ads can start the same day.

When ads win

  • You need predictable reach by a date, such as a launch or a sale. Ads let you set spend and timing.
  • Your product is expensive to ship or too fragile for gifting, so each package costs more than it returns.
  • You already have creative that converts and the job is to scale it, not to find more of it.
  • Few creators in your category respond to product-only offers, so your post rate would be low.

These are rules of thumb, not findings from data. Your own post rate, views and CPM decide the answer, which is what the calculator above is for. If you pay creators instead of gifting, see the influencer rate calculator and the gift, pay or affiliate picker.

Use gifted content as ads

Gifting and ads are not either-or. The third column above shows gifted posts with a boost budget behind them. On Meta and TikTok, a brand can run ads from a creator's post only after the creator authorises it inside the platform, so ask for that permission and agree the duration in writing. Gifted product on its own does not hand you ad rights. Check each platform's own help centre for the current steps.

The Spark Ads and whitelisting cost estimator prices that step, and the influencer contract generator includes usage terms. Creators should also disclose the free product; the FTC explains when in its Endorsement Guides Q&A.

Questions about gifting vs paid ads

Is influencer marketing cheaper than Facebook ads?

It can be, but it is not guaranteed. Gifting costs product and postage and only produces content if creators post, while ads cost media spend and creative production. Compare cost per 1,000 views and cost per piece of content using your own post rate and your own ad CPM, as this calculator does.

Can I run ads with gifted influencer content?

Yes, if the creator agrees. Both Meta and TikTok let a brand run ads from a creator's post once the creator gives permission inside the platform. Agree usage in writing first, including how long you may run it and whether you may boost, because gifted product alone does not grant ad rights.

Are ad impressions the same as video views?

No. An impression counts when an ad is shown, while a view depends on how the platform counts a play. This calculator treats them as comparable units for a rough cost per 1,000, which is a simplification. Use it to size up options, not to report precise reach.

Where do I get my own ad CPM?

Look at your own ad account. Meta Ads Manager and TikTok Ads Manager both report CPM for each campaign. Use a recent average from comparable audiences and creative, not a figure from an article, because CPMs vary widely by country, audience, season and platform.

Do gifted posts need a disclosure?

Usually yes. The FTC says a free product can create a material connection that should be disclosed even when nothing is paid and the creator is not required to post. Ask creators to disclose clearly, and see our influencer disclosure guide for the details by country.

Methodology and sources

gifting cost = creators × all-in cost per package

pieces = round(creators × post rate); views = pieces × views per post

impressions = ad spend ÷ CPM × 1,000

ad cost = ad spend + creatives × production cost per creative

cost per 1,000 = cost ÷ views (or impressions) × 1,000

gifted + boost = (gifting cost + boost) ÷ (gifted views + boost impressions) × 1,000

Every default here (25 creators, 40% post rate, 2,000 views per post, a 12-unit CPM, 30-unit CPA and the production costs) is an illustrative starting assumption. None of them is a benchmark, an industry average or a Seed statistic, and we deliberately do not publish a typical CPM because it varies too much by country, audience and season. Views and impressions are treated as comparable units, which is a simplification. The boost is assumed to deliver at the same CPM as your ads, and the boost column ignores any overlap between organic and paid audiences. The FTC link is the only external source used, for the disclosure point.
